Lempäälä Equestrian Center

Lempäälä Equestrian Center is a private stable approved by the Finnish Equestrian Federation, offering high-quality facilities for private horses.

Feeding, conducted five times a day, is facilitated by Heinätin Indoor704 hay feeders, which are filled from the aisle. This regular feeding schedule helps the horses to thrive.

The benefits of Heinätin feeders are significant in a large stable. They eliminate hay waste, keep the stable clean by distributing a full day’s hay at once, and maintain a consistent feeding rhythm every day throughout the year. Employees don’t need to wait for slower eaters, and horses can be fed outside of regular working hours—individual needs are also easily accommodated.

Bad stable habits decrease as all horses receive their hay simultaneously. The benefits are substantial, which is why we have Heinätin feeders for all 50 horses. Thank you, Katja and Jarkko, for the super-easy collaboration and always available assistance!

RECO EQUESTRIAN, Åland Islands

The Reco Equestrian stable in Åland Islands, with its 25 stalls, provides high-quality facilities for both horses and people. Completed in October 2017, the stable is designed to meet the demanding needs of competition horses while being practical and aesthetically pleasing.

The owner, entrepreneur, and competitive rider Rebecka Eriksson wanted to include Heinätin Indoor704 hay feeders in the modern stable to enhance the horses’ well-being and simplify the workday for stable staff.

We wanted hay feeders that could be filled from the aisle. Responses from Sweden were reluctant, and they were not prepared to provide the special solutions we needed. We were almost losing hope when we contacted Katja and Jarkko from Heinätin feeders. The reception was completely different; they were ready to solve all our problems and deliver exactly the hay feeders we wanted,” Rebecka explains.

In addition to excellent service, Rebecka was pleased that Heinätin feeders are a product of Finnish craftsmanship.

At first, stable staff were skeptical about whether the feeders would work flawlessly, but their concerns quickly dissipated with the implementation. Expectations were high regarding the reduction in working hours. “The product delivered on its promise. Previously, work hours were from 7 AM to 9:30 PM. Now we can schedule from 8 AM to 8 PM. The horses are also wonderfully calm, as everyone gets their food at the same time,” says stable worker Kaisa Moilanen.

Thanks to the shorter feeding intervals, the horses at Reco Equestrian now receive hay five times a day. The hope is that this more frequent feeding will positively impact the horses’ health and reduce the occurrence of colic. Heinätin feeders are especially praised for their excellent design and the consideration given to both horse and human safety in every screw and nut placement. The ease of quickly and effortlessly filling the feeders from the aisle also helps the staff’s daily routine. “In the new stable, we are, of course, also delighted with the aesthetics and the fact that there are no more blue Ikea bags lying around in the aisles.

NUKARIn ratsutila

Founded in 2015, Nukarin ratsutila in Nurmijärvi, conveniently located for travelers from Hyvinkää, Helsinki, and Tuusula, offers comprehensive horse boarding services. The new, 30-horse active paddock, completed in spring 2024, provides horses with spacious, state-of-the-art facilities that meet current and future standards for horse care while offering high-quality amenities for equestrian enthusiasts.

The active paddock features automated feeding every three hours around the clock, with a total of 16 Hay Walls and two Haywatch Lite feeders. This hay automation, combined with the straw bedding in the sleeping area, allows horses to engage in their natural behavior of chewing forage whenever they want, while also controlling the energy intake from the hay. Individual concentrate feeding and pasture access for the horses are also automated.

The combination of free movement in the paddock and automated feeding allows staff to focus more on monitoring the horses’ well-being, as work time is not consumed by moving horses or hay multiple times a day.

Finnish Heinätin was chosen as the hay feeding solution because working with Katja and Jarkko was smooth and the product development during the bidding process met our needs, including the addition of hay rack covers instead of bars. The final result was exactly as agreed upon.

Thank you!

Kati Susi, who runs the Koivurinne Icelandic Horse Farm, purchased the first Heinätin devices for her six Icelandic horses back in 2016. Icelandic horses are extremely efficient at utilizing feed, and their waistlines tend to expand quickly if they are given too much hay.

“Previously, arranging frequent and restricted feeding was challenging because my horses live a few kilometers away from my own yard,” Kati explains.

Since acquiring the Heinätin devices, managing the daily barn routine has become easier and Kati’s free time has increased. What has brought Kati the most joy, however, is that her horses’ internal clocks are now tuned to regular hay munching, preventing the burning hunger that used to negatively impact their health and quality of life.

“Heinätin devices have been the best decision I’ve made as a horse owner,” says Kati. “The horses are happy and healthy—and even slimmer, thanks to the small and regular portions of hay,” she adds.

Kati also calculated that the Heinätin investment paid for itself in just 16 months solely through reduced travel costs—not to mention the time saved.

“Heinätin devices distribute hay in the evening, overnight, and early in the morning, so now we can start the morning barn chores by 9:30 and leave the barn much earlier in the evening, well before the evening news. It makes everyday life so much easier,” says Kati.

The Heinätin hay dispensers eliminated the concern of excessively long overnight feeding intervals at the Kpedu Kaustinen equestrian facility.

At the Kpedu Kaustinen, formerly known as the Kaustinen Harness Racing Institute, evening barn chores are completed by 6 p.m., and the lights are not turned on again until 6 a.m. The twelve-hour break is a long time for horses to be without forage, significantly increasing the risk of developing ulcers due to an empty stomach.

“Before acquiring the Heinätin devices, we had to dispense a relatively large amount of evening hay at once, as we were worried about the long feeding interval and wanted to ensure there was enough to last through the night,” explains barn manager Kati Siila.

For horses with lighter use, large single servings caused weight management issues. More selective horses would often trample and mess up excess hay in their stalls, which increased hay waste.

“The long overnight break has been particularly problematic for competitive horses in training, who may already be poor eaters. The Heinätin devices have definitely improved these horses’ hay intake and, as a result, enhanced their well-being by providing a regular supply of hay throughout the night.”

The positive effects of the Heinätin devices became evident quickly in the horses’ behavior and condition.

“When we first loaded the dispensers, the hay portions seemed small. However, the total amount of hay was the same as before; it was just distributed over more feeding sessions. The picky horses no longer scatter hay around their stalls but instead wait contentedly for the next portion. The thin horses have maintained their weight well, and the heavier ones have slimmed down,” Siila summarizes.

The Heinätin® product family offers feeding solutions to meet the needs of all barns and paddocks.
